For immediate release
October 12, 2021
Today, the Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas released a new memorandum on worksite enforcement to outline DHS’s role in protecting workers and their labor rights. The memo calls for an immediate cessation of mass worksite raids by ICE and expanded consideration of requests for prosecutorial discretion for workers who are victims of, or witnesses to, workplace exploitation, along with other protections.
We applaud Secretary Mayorkas’ pivotal decision to protect immigrant workers. This announcement is a step forward that will make workplaces across the country safer and will finally put an end to worksite raids that have devastated entire communities and threatened the safety and well-being of all workers. This decision will also ensure that immigrants working in hospitality and other essential industries can speak out against unjust treatment without fearing employer intimidation, arrest, or deportation.
All workers deserve the right to a safe and dignified workplace with fair pay. As a labor union, we know that labor rights and immigrant rights go hand in hand. Our union represents over 300,000 mainly Black and Brown immigrant workers who stand in solidarity with each other both in their workplace and in their communities. We will continue to push for strong labor standards for all workers and a more just and inclusive immigration system that recognizes the humanity and labor of all immigrants.
